Receiving clinical specimens in the laboratory:

Bacteriology

Receiving clinical specimens in the laboratory

Bacteriology


From Monday to Friday 8.00-16.00: Hospital staff or the patient may transport the specimen to the laboratory. In every case, they have to leave the specimen at the window of the sample receiving room, where they have to register the specimen in a special book. If the number of the specimens is high, hospital staff may transport the specimens to the laboratory, where she/he gives the specimens to a laboratory technician.

From Monday to Friday between18.00 and 22.00: a laboratory technician processes samples arriving in the laboratory between 16.00 and 21.30 (except faecal specimens). In the case of high number of clinical specimens, laboratory technician will process the samples according to priority (blood culture, specimens for anaerobic culture, and CSF) or set up rapid antigen tests, such as meningitis rapid antigen test, Group B Streptococci, Legionella pneumophila, and Streptococcus pneumoniae antigen tests from upper and lower respiratory specimens and urine samples between 18.00-22.00. After 21.30, specimens will be processed next day.

 

Receiving samples during off hours: in the case of urgent request, physician has to call the microbiologist inside the clinical centre the phone number is 10-59.

During off hours, the laboratory is closed. The person, who transports the specimen to the laboratory has to ring the bell in the Laboratory Medicine. The technician in the Laboratory Medicine will open the door and the person who transported the specimen, has to leave the sample at the window of the sample receiving room and she/he has to register the sample in a special book.

Saturday, Sunday and Holidays: during these days, reduced staff is available in the laboratory from 8.00 to 12.00. After this period, one microbiologist is available on phone and if the request is urgent, physician has to call the microbiologist to perform sample processing (inside the clinical centre the phone number is 10-59.

Virology and serology and molecular microbiology labs:

Virology and serology labs receive specimens from Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 16.00. Samples arrived in the laboratory until 14.00 were registered on the same day. Investigations are set up according to the lab weekly working schedule.

Parasitology-Serology-Mycology laboratories:

These laboratories receive specimens from Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 16.00. Rapid antigen tests and urgent investigations are set up on the same day, other investigations are carried out according to the lab weekly working schedule.

In the case of urgent requests, physician has to call the lab and indicate the type of investigations, in these cases the price is higher (3x) than the normal price.
